Big Rig Score Card!

This is our first full club tasting post. We have held several tastings over the last year but have not yet brought them to you, our fans. When scoring our tastings we use the Beer Judge Certification Program and American Homebrewers association Score card (AHA/BJCP). The format presented here isn't perfect but we're working on it. Any and all comments are welcome. Let us know if there's a better format you'd like to see or give suggestions on what improvements you would like to see.
Overall our Big Rig experience was good. As stated in our review of the Brew Pub, the food was quite good and the service was outstanding. Though it may seem like we are a little hard on their beer selections, we did all agree that Big Rig would be a great hang out for a few casual pints. Many of the selections we tried seemed geared towards less avid beer drinkers. Many were passing fair but seemed almost dumbed down style wise so as to appeal to a casual beer drinker and not the raging Beer freaks we are.

All our members rate the beers based on their own individual taste. That is why you will see such drastic swings in the scoring. We try to bring a number of different opinions to the table so as to try and cover the gambit of beer lovers.

Hope you enjoy!

Big Rig Red

Aroma: Very weak nose. There was a slight yeastyness with hints of malt barely discernable.
Scored: 7, 6, 7, 9, 5, 7, 7, 4 - Total 6.5/12

Appearance: Clear light copper. Some felt this was not red enough for a tradition Red. Maintained good head retention.
Scored: 1, 1.5, 1, 2, 2.5, 1, 1, 1 - Total 1.5/3

Flavor: Bready but not as buscuity as some would have liked. Some sour notes. Many felt it was unrefined, incomplete.
Scored: 8, 10, 8, 16, 16, 14.5, 6, 10 - Total 11/ 20

Mouthfeel: Lightly coated the mouth. Felt grainy through the finish.
Scored: 3, 2, 2, 3.5, 3.5, 4.5, 1.5, 2 - Total 3 /5

Overall Impression: An underwhelming selection. Some felt this was not brewed to style. Flavor was not as pronounced as many would have liked. Lacked the real breadyness of a traditional Red. Was very easy to drink but lacked polish. Felt incomplete.
Scored: 5, 4, 7.5, 8, 7, 3, 8, 7 - Total 6/ 10

Complete Score: 28 / 50

Big Rig GoldAroma: Light wheaty nose.
Scored: 6, 3, 7, 5, 7, 4, 6, 4 - Total 5/12

Appearance: Pale straw in color. Very little head retention. Slightly cloudy.
Scored: 1.5, 2, 1, 2, 1.5, 2.5, 2.5, 1 - Total 2/3

Flavor: Mild hop bitterness. Weak aftertaste with bready notes as it finishes. Some sour notes.
Scored: 12, 12, 14, 10, 12, 11, 14, 10 - Total 12/20

Mouthfeel: High carbonation.
Scored: 2, 3, 2, 2, 3.5, 2, 2.5, 2 - Total 2/5

Overall Impression: Easy to drink but a little disappointing. Has a great color and presentation but fell a little flat in flavor. The bitterness was not what we have come to expect from a blonde. Many felt it would stand as a decent session beer on a hot day but would not be a staple of their fridge.
Scored: 5, 5, 4, 4, 5, 3, 4, 4 - Total 4/10

Complete Score: 25/50

Big Rig Brown
Aroma: Sweet caramel and cherry notes. Roasted malt with hints of nuts.
Scored: 5, 6, 7, 8, 7.5, 4, 4, 4 - Total 6/12

Appearance: Dark and translucent. Good head retention. Thick chestnut color.
Scored: 3, 2.5, 3, 2, 2, 2.5, 2.5, 2.5 - Total 2.5/3

Flavor: Faint roasted malts. Some coffee notes. Tart through the middle but finishes flat. Again, almost and incomplete beer.

Scored: 16, 12, 11, 16, 15, 15, 12, 11 - Total 14/20

Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation. Coats the mouth well, leaving some sligh bitterness on the mouth through the middle and leaves no lasting effects.
Scored: 3, 2.5, 1.5, 2.5, 2.5, 2.5, 2.5, 2 - Total 2.5/5

Overall Impression: Many felt they would like a 2nd but not a 3rd. Brewed to style but weaker then many would like to have seen. Many felt it would do for and introduction to Brown’s but couldn’t stand with many other popular beers of that style.

Scored: 7.5, 6, 4, 6, 6.5, 6, 4, 3 - Total 5/10

Complete Score: 29.5/50

Scored: 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 2, 2, 3, - Total 2/3

Flavor: Hoppy pop! Some sweetness with good bitterness. Citrus and sour notes through the finish.
Scored: 16.5, 11, 13, 10, 17.5, 16.5, 14, 13 - Total 14/20

Mouthfeel: Lightly carbonated. Good mouth coating. Has a lingering tangyness that dissipates quickly.
Scored: 4, 3.5, 2.5, 1, 4.5, 4, 2.5, 3 - Total 3/5

Overall Impression: Many felt it was a weak representation of the style but not done poorly. Not very complex. Good hoppy bitterness. Again, a good beer to introduce the style with.

Complete Score: 32/50

Hope you enjoy, Cheers!
